12 April 2008 Initial sample of the new web site. This is sample of the MERC web site. The formatting is ugly at this point, and will be changing over the next week to nicer formatting. Formatting changes planned include colours in tables to group and separate information, improved display of news items and additional content such as organisation contacts and information on the club. Once the site is looking okay, creation and maintenance of a digital media page will be investigated so we can display photos and provide downloads of clips from the MERC event video. The site will evolve continually this year, so layout and look should improve a lot from this initial build. A tool will be produced so club members with limited technical experience can update content on the site. This tool also has the potential to capture event data at events and perhaps make scoring easier. If scoring can be computerised, the manual recording system will always be required as a backup in case of system failure. In order to keep the hosting cheap, I have organised for static hosting with decent bandwidth. This means that the site is not interactive in anyway and displays static content only. The content is generated dynamically off-line using a custom utility to generate all the site pages from data. This allows rapid changes to site formatting as each page can be updated easily.
